all you are doing is cancleing the 2s. you know that 2/2 is 1 so you could split the fraction up to see it better you get
-2/2 +_ [2sqrt(-1)]/2    <-----the 2 on the bottom cancles with the 2 on the top
which gets you -1 +_ sqrt(-1)
all the problem is doing is cancleing the 2s..do you see that?

given      x=

       now,       x =  2 ( -1 ± 1√-1) / 2                     [taking 2 common in numerator]
2 in numerator and denominator gets cancelled and we get x = -1 ± √-1
