Course Textbook Chapter Problem Needs by
Calculus Based Physics University Physics with Modern Physics (12th) by Young, Freedman 27 18E N/A
Question Details:
An alpha particle (a He nuclues, contianing 2 protons and 2 neutrons having mass of 6.64x10^-27kg) traveling horizontally at 35.6km/s enters a uniform veritcal 1.10T magnetic field.
(a) what is the diameter of the path follewed by this alpha particle?
(b) what effects does the magnetic field have on the speed of this particle?
(c) what are the magnitude and direction of the acceleration of the alpha particle while it is in the magnetic field?
(d) Explain why the speed of the particle does not change even though an unbalanced external force acts on it.

Response Details:
A) [6.64x10^-27 * 35.6x10^3] / [3.20x10^-19*1.10T] = 6.73x10^-4m=.673nm, 2R=1.35mm

B)work energy theorem says that the kinetic energy of the particle is constant

C)a=v^2/r = 35.6x10^3 / 6.73x10^-4 = 1.88x10^12m/s^2. The acceleration is perpendicular to v and B and so is horizontal, toward the center of curvature of the particles path

D)the unbalanced force is perpendiular to v, so it changes the direction of v but not its magnitude, which is the speed.
