Question Details:
The lead female character in the movie Diamonds Are Forever is standing at the edge of an offshore oil rig. As she fires a gun, she is driven back over the edge and into the sea. Suppose the mass of a bullet is 0.006 kg, and its velocity is +728 m/s. Her mass (including the gun) is 47 kg.
(a) What recoil velocity does she acquire in response to a single shot from a stationary position, assuming that no external force keeps her in place?
Enter a number.
1 m/s

(b) Under the same assumption, what would be her recoil velocity if, instead, she shoots a blank cartridge that ejects a mass of 5.0 multiplied by 10-4 kg at a velocity of +728 m/s?
Enter a number.
2 m/s

Response Details:

  Given that the mass of bullet is m = 0.006 kg
  Initial velocity is u = 728 m/s
  Mass of person and gun is M = 47 kg
------------------------------------------------------------

  Since there is no external force on the system so the momentum conserved
              mu = M*v
                v = mu / M
                   = 0.092 m/s
 If the mass of each cartridge is m = 5.0*10-4 kg
               mu = M*v
                 v = mu / M
                   = 0.0077 m/s
