Question Details:

Without noticing, the furnace is also only one meter deep (which impinges on the bar after closing the door of the furnace). Answer the following issues concerning this bar: (a) What would the “free expansion” of the bar have been had it not been constrained in the ‘too small’ furnace? (see www.MatWeb.com for properties); (b) What would the compressive stress be in the tube in the constrained furnace situation actually used?; (c) what is this level of true stress in the tube?
