example: 268 + 483
step 1: add the value of the digits in the hundreds : 200 + 400 = 600
step 2: add the value of the digits in the tens:           60 + 80 = 140
step 3: add the value of the digits in the ones:            8 + 3 = 11
final step:     add     600 + 140 + 11                                   = 751
