Question Details:

A bike road race starts at an elevation of 590 feet and passes through 5 stages where the elevation changes by -69 feet, -449 feet, 469 feet, -140 feet, and -224 feet. At what elevation does the race end?

you start at 590 feet, so every time there is a negative (-) sign in front of the elevation it means you go down in elevation, and every time there is not a negative sign you increase your elevation.  So you would solve it like this:
       
                         590-69-449+469-140-224=your answer.
