Question Details:
In order to understand the di®erences between the Work-Energy Theorem and Newton's
second law (Fnet = ma), you need to use both methods on the same problem. Below are
three problems where you are to do just that. You will ¯nd that not every question that
we ask can be answered, but you should be clear about why they can't be answered.

A 5 kg block rests on a 30 degree
incline a distance of 1:3
m up the ramp. The ramp
is frictionless. The block is
released from rest.
d=1.3m
a-  Use the Work-Energy Theorem to ¯nd the velocity at the bottom of the ramp.

b-Use the Work-Energy Theorem to ¯nd how long it takes to get to the bottom
of the ramp.

c- Use Newton's second law to ¯nd the velocity at the bottom of the ramp.

d- Use Newton's second law to ¯nd how long it takes to get to the bottom of the
ramp.
